Carrick inspired after Pogba pep-talk

The 36-year-old is hanging up his boots at the end of the season and will join manager Jose Mourinho's coaching team going into 2018/19.

Nonetheless, the playmaker believes speaking to Pogba before the match at least in some small way inspired the France star to produce what was eventually a match-winning performance in the 3-2 win.

He told Sky Sports: "I just kept it simple and said 'this is what you are' and 'this is what you're good at'.

"But listen, he scored two goals so it's not down to me. I'm glad I did (have an impact) because it shows little things do register with players."

With the player's glittering 19-year playing career coming to an end when the 2017/18 season concludes, the former England star admitted he never anticipated going into coaching but is now relishing the prospect.

Carrick added: "Three or four years ago I probably wouldn't have thought I'd go down that route. It wasn't until I started my coaching badges that I found that I enjoyed it."
