Five Foods To Avoid When You are Over 40

While 40 is a very important age and a milestone in any person's life, it often comes with adjustments that need to be made to improve the health status of an individual.

Here are five foods you should cut down on once you're 40 and above:

Red meat
Diets high in red meat are usually linked to high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and a greater risk of diabetes. Men are at a higher risk of prostate cancer when they consume other meats cooked at high temperatures as this is often carcinogenic.

Carbonated drinks
Carbonated drinks are usually filled with caffeine, fructose and refined sugar. The caffeine content can trigger gout, and the sugar can increase insulin level, therefore, putting you at risk of having a heart attack by 20 percent.

White bread products
White bread and other white flour foods usually produce a state of inflammation in the body which can worsen arthritis and cause spikes in blood sugar. Some experts have explained that the additive potassium bromate contained in bread is toxic to human cells and causes cancer in animals.

French fries
While the consumption of french fries is gradually becoming more common, this kind of food usually pump the arteries with oils. Also, the calories in these fried foods can cause weight gain which can lead to other diseases and hormonal imbalance, while the unhealthy, heated oils found in these foods can lead to heart disease.

Fruit juice
While fruit juice may seem like a great idea, it is usually not advisable for people over this age. This is because the beneficial fibre has already been removed from the fruit and this can spike the sugar level especially for men with diabetes and gout.
