It's Goodbye To PDP And A Warm Welcome To UPP, As Tony Nwulu Defects

As more political surprises continue to emerge ahead of the 2019 general elections, Hon Tony Nwulu is on the news again, as he officially announces his defection from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the United Progressive Party (UPP). Hon Nwulu was elected on the platform of the PDP in 2015 to represent the people of Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives.

However, in a letter to the Speaker, House of Representatives, obtained by newsmen and dated 24th July, 2018, Hon. Nwulu explained his reasons for leaving the PDP, citing internal crisis, among others.

In his words, "this defection is as a result of irreconcilable conflicts in my party and in accordance with section 68 (1) (g) of the 1999 constitution (as amended)" Hon Nwulu, who has been projected as one of the favourites for the 2019 Imo State Governorship election became a national sensation following his sponsorship of the Not-Too-Young-To-Run Bill, which has since been signed into law.

Reports of his possible defection from the PDP had been making the rounds in the media since over a month ago, but the vibrant and youthful legislator only confirmed the reports yesterday with the aforementioned letter.

Reacting to the news of Hon. Nwulu's defection, an Abuja based political analyst, and an indigene of Imo state, Engr. Sunday Okoroafor, said "Hon Tony has become a political star and a symbol of hope for political leadership to youths across the country, especially in south east and Imo state, and as such he is clearly a crucial political asset to whichever party he enlists with, and a major loss to the party he quits.

So, it would be correct to say that with this defection, UPP has just become a major contender for the Imo State 2019 guber election".

Analyst say that unlike the previous elections where the race is always between APC and PDP, this time, a third strong force has just emerged. They reason for this is attributed to the influential command Hon. Nwulu has over youths in the country, especially in Imo State. This acceptance among the youths was recently demonstrated when youths of the 27 local governments of Imo State unanimously adopted Hon. Nwulu as their candidate for the 2019 guber.

The coming weeks and months will be very interesting ones for political observers and pundits in Imo
