Cross River: PDP Chieftain survives kidnap attack

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart in Cross River, Chief Nelson Obono Ofem, has escaped a suspected kidnap attempt at the Betem axis in Biase Local Government Area of the Calabar-Ikom highway, Wednesday morning.

Chief Ofem was traveling to Calabar from his hometown, Ugep in Yakurr Local Government Area of the State when the suspected criminals opened fire on him. He escaped unhurt, but the bullet pierced through his car.

“On my way to Calabar, I ran into kidnappers/armed robbers at Betem, Biase Local Government Area, Biase/Calabar highway, but to the glory of God, only my car sustained bullet wounds.

“To God alone be the glory for victory over the devil. Let His name alone be glorified for the great things He has done in Jesus name, Amen,” Chief Ofem wrote on his Facebook Wall immediately after the incident on Wednesday.

Speaking with Global Patriot Newspapers on telephone, Chief Ofem, who was the former Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ben Ayade on Solid Minerals said the incident occurred at about 7:00 a.m.

“I was driving to Calabar from Ugep. When I arrived Betem in Biase Local Government Area, I saw six men wearing black with red pieces of clothes tied round their heads and guns standing in the middle of the highway before me.

“On sighting them, I contemplated engaging the reverse gear, when my mind told me it would be risky. I then had to summon up courage and accelerated with speed towards them, while bending my head by the dashboard.

“As they saw my car approaching them with speed, they had to jump off the road, while opening fire on the car. That is how I escaped,” he stated.

The former House of Assembly aspirant for Yakurr 1 State Constituency in Cross River State, also said he had to stop at the next village to alert them about his experience on the highway as well as stop other vehicles from continuing to the spot.

“I also had to drive to the military check point as well as the police check point to inform them of the incident before continuing my journey to Calabar,” Chief Ofem said.

He expressed worry on the continued presence of the criminal elements on the highway, adding that, “they have now left Akamkpa axis of the road and are now operating in Betem around the area where they are mining.”

Global Patriot gathered that, the Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Pastor Usani Uguru Usani survived an attack on that spot on the highway a fortnight ago, while the Chief of Staff to Governor Ben Ayade, Hon. Martins Orim was attacked there last Sunday.
