In Imo State, the clock is ticking. The d -day is getting close. March 9, 2019 is the day Imo youths will define their destiny as they goout in their numbers to elect a new State Governor.
It is a decisive moment for them. There are 50 governorship candidates jostling to take over from Governor Rochas Okorocha. The youngest of them all is the United Progressive Party, UPP governorship candidate, Hon. Tony Nwulu. He is just 40 and in the race among other political gladiators such as Senator Ifeanyi Araraume (APGA), Hon Emeka Ihedioha (PDP) and many others.
Barely few days to the governorship election, there is growing consensus among the youths that the time to have one of their own as Governor has come. They seek to change history in a State no Governor below the age of 50 has mounted the saddle of governance, in a State plagued by poor governance orchestrated by poor leadership in the last seven years.
Tony Nwulu has emerged as the symbol, the instrument Imo youths intend to use to change their destiny. He has dared the odds and has moved on a frenetic pace to write a new chapter in the political history books of the State. He is now rated among the top seven governorship candidates in the contest drawing his strength from thousands of Imo youths who have described him as the bridge between the old and new generation.
He has assured of a fresh air in the State, a wind of a new beginning. He insists Imo State has no business to be classified a poor State, a state ravaged by political predators who have fed fat on the commonwealth of the masses. His Roadmap to Restoration is a comprehensive economic blueprint aimed at stimulating rapid economic growth that would guarantee prompt payment of salaries of workers and pensions of pensioners.
Nwulu is a proponent of a new Imo, a state that ought to be connected to the global community to afford the people boundless opportunities. He has promised a 24 hour all night economy, which is the key to the rejuvenation of the State in addition to making Imo an ICT hub.
He is the only governorship candidate whose aspiration has attracted interest from world powers such as China and Taiwan. He had hosted the Chinese and Taiwanese Ambassadors who assured of massive investments in Imo if he is elected Governor.
Nwulu's antecedents speak volume of his credibility and ability to lead Imo State. He is the first Igbo after the great Late Nnamdi Azikiwe to win a Federal Seat outside Igbo land. He is also the first Federal lawmaker whose Not Too Young To Run Bill attracted international acclaim when it was read on the floor of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA.
This has earned him accolades from key stakeholders across the State and beyond. The latest to to testify of Nwulu's giant strides was the Chairman, Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Ohiri who said the time has come to recognize Nwulu for the betterment of Imo youths.
He said "At your age, you have achieved what no Igbo young man has done by conquering Lagos State and also sponsoring the Not Too Young To Run Act. This as a matter of fact shows you have the interest of the youths at heart"
Tony Nwulu's overwhelming acceptance was also evident during his colourful campaigns across the 27 local Governments in the State where he met and interacted with the poor, the needy, men, women and children who encouraged his governorship ambition and pledged their support.
As Governorship election holds on Saturday in Imo State, Tony Nwulu is on the verge of shattering another barrier; he did it in Lagos State where he defied the odds to win Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency. He will do it in Imo. Indeed, History beckons, as the youths choose a new beginning.
