Nigeria Joins Global Community: Emerges The First To Test-Run 5G Technology In West Africa.


The Nigerian president says the migration from 4G to 5G would be a revolution in the industry

- Buhari directs the minister of communications and digital technology, Isa Pantami, to address the challenges facing the telecoms sector

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, November 25, endorsed the trial of 5G technology thereby making Nigeria the first country in West Africa to test-run 5G technology and applications.

The Nigerian president gave the endorsement at first live demo of 5G network event in Abuja, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Buhari who was represented at the occasion by the minister of communications and digital technology, Dr Isa Pantami, expressed delight to be part of the historical moment, stressing that migration from 4G to 5G would be a revolution in the industry

The president also directed Pantami to address the challenges facing the telecoms sector systematically, adding that an executive order was in the pipeline to consider Telecommunications Infrastructure as critical national assets.

“We are working day in day out to make sure that the environment is conducive for people to do their businesses.

“This administration is passionate about developing Nigeria’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) Sector which contributes more than Oil and Gas to GDP,” Buhari said.

Meanwhile, the federal government on Tuesday, November 5 insisted the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) must work out modalities to reduce the price of data in the interest of Nigerians.

This was the position of the minister of communications and digital economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami. Pantami said his office has been inundated with complaints from concerned Nigerians about the high cost of data by telecoms operators.

He mandated the management of the NCC led by its board chairman, Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye, to work out the modalities with other stakeholders in the industry to address the complaints as soon as possible.
