FCTA Awards Contract For Upgrade Of Abuja Slums
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has awarded contracts for a detailed engineering design, for the proposed Abuja integrated infrastructure project, which aims at upgrading unplanned settlements and slums in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
LEADERSHIP gathered the contracts, which were awarded under the supervision of Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), was meant to upgrade FCT slums so that they can benefit from the same quality of infrastructure that is obtainable in the city centre.
Speaking during an inspection exercise for the engineering design in Abuja yesterday, director of monitoring and inspection, TpL Olawale Labiyi, noted that the upgrade of slums in the FCT would impact positively the lives of the masses.
Labiyi disclosed that the first phase of the project would be carried out in Orozo community in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and in Kwali area council, even as he urged the contractors handling the project to expedite action on the designs.
Earlier, the team leader that inspected the designs, Engr. Ijirotimi Olanrewaju, had noted that communities like Orozo, Kwali and others, in the FCT have unplanned developments, adding that the aim of the administration was is provide infrastructure that is commensurate to those at the city centre.
Olarenwaju explained that the scope of the work for the designs include carrying out of reconnaissance survey of the project area, planning design, preliminary and final engineering design, which would include roads, water, sewage and electricity.
He pointed out that the major challenge facing the project is compensation, adding that the contractors have brought on board members of the communities so that they can help identify properties that would be affected by the upgrade.
It was gathered that the contract for Orozo community slum upgrade was awarded to M/S Grid Design Associates, while that of Kwali area council was given to M/S Alim And Associates.
