COVID-19: Abuja Markets now to operate three times a week

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has directed that markets in the territory only operate three times weekly. They will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7.000 am to 2:00 pm. A statement yesterday by the Chief Press Secretary to the FCT Minister, Mr. Anthony Ogunleye, said the directive was part of measures to limit the spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic in the FCT. The statement added that the FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, issued this directive in Abuja yesterday during a meeting with FCT market managers and the top hierarchy of the FCT Police Command, led by the FCT Police Commissioner, Bala Ciroma.

Bello, who was represented at the meeting by the Director of Security Services Department, Adamu Gwary, said only retailers would be allowed to operate within the markets as wholesale services would not be permitted. The minister directed market managers and the FCT Police Command to ensure compliance by monitoring all entry and exit points of the various markets as well as activities of the traders. He also advised FCT residents to patronise markets within their neighbourhoods rather than going to the major markets in the territory.
