Abuja Lawyers, NBA Chairman drag Odinkalu, others to court over malicious, divisive letter against Judge Nominees

Some Abuja based lawyers including the capital bar chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, has dragged former Chairman of the Human Right commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu and others to a federal high court over a letter to President Buhari opposing the 33 persons Nominated by National Judicial Council NJC as High court Judges of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Plaintiffs, Tochukwu Ohazuruike Esq and Clement Chkwuemeka Ugo Esq (Chairman of NBA) are asking a federal high court to stop both the president and the attorney general of the federation from entertaining the letter signed by odinkalu and others.

In court papers filled by their lawyer Okoro Nkemakolam Esq, the plaintiff described Odinkalu’s Letter as mendacious, mischievous, malicious, divisive, calculated to denigrate the integrity of the NJC. They argued that the writers of the letter lacks the legal backing to credit or discredit the Nominees selected through a thorough process involving all the stakeholders.
The Plaintiffs furthers wants the court to issue an order of perpetual injunction, restraining Prof Odinkalu and his group,  from taking further steps to impugn, disparage, and or criticize the 33 persons in the list recommended by the NJC to the President for appointment as Judges of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking to BarristerNG, Plaintiff’s counsel, Okoro Nkemakolam Esq decried the unwarranted and mischievous letter that is solely aimed at tarnishing the images of 33 outstanding persons nominated through a careful and lawful process by the NJC as FCT High Court Judges. He decribed the case as a public interest litigation which is aimed at protecting the sanctity of our judiciary and the NJC.
The case is yet to be assigned to any judge.
