PREPARATIONS for the discharge of Nigerian returnees from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and THE United Kingdom (UK) have begun, it was learnt last night.
The Federal Government conveyed 678 Nigerians who were stranded in the UAE (265), UK (253) and the United States (160) in three batches.
The fourth batch of 292 stranded Nigerians from Saudi Arabia arrived in Abuja on Tuesday, bringing the number of evacuees since the global lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic to 970.
It was learnt that the results of the COVID-19 tests of those brought back from UK will be out today.
Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama confirmed on Thursday that preparations for the discharge of the first two batches had advanced.

Speaking during the daily PTF briefing, the minister said the police authorities had also been briefed to grant them easy passage to their various states.
He said: “I just want to give an update because we are coming to the end of the 14-day quarantine period for the first and second batches of evacuees. You will recall that the first batch came in from Dubai and second batch came in from London to Abuja, and the first batch is in Lagos. Then, we have the third batch that came in from New Jersey, U.S.A.
“So, as they come to the end of 14 days, I spoke to the Inspector-General of Police today (yesterday) and he was very happy because some of them would have to travel across states and that has been a source of concern for them.”
