  • While Enjoying The Festive Period, Make Your Health A Priority, Halima Usman Urges

The founder HalimaFactor Initiative For Community Development, Halima Usman has called on Nigerians and residents in the country to make their health a priority even as they go about enjoying the festive period.

While underlying that health is the number one enabler of productivity, Usman who is also the chairman Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA Abuja chapter noted that keeping fit and looking good is a stepping stone to a healthy lifestyle.

Speaking from the North Eastern state of Gombe where she is currently observing her Christmas and New Year holidays after an activity-packed year, Usman who took her walk to the beautiful street of Gombe, along the popular Rainbow roundabout said keeping fit is of utmost importance to her.

"Today (Wednesday) is the 29th day of December 2021. And I'm here taking a walk on the street of Gombe.

"Take a walk, take a stroll and stay fit," she urged in a Facebook video on Wednesday.

The education advocate had earlier in the year engaged in series of activities in addition to her very tight official schedules.

One of such was the launch and public presentation of her five books in July in Abuja, the nation's capital, an event that witnessed the presence of high and mighty in the society.

Among those who graced the event are, Minister of Women Affairs, Paulin Tallen, Representative of Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, immediate past Permanent Secretary Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Bitrus Bako Nabasu, Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, DG National Orientation Agency, Dr. Garba Abari, Mai Kaltungo Engr. • Tension As Government Orders Doctors To Kill The COVID-19 Patients If They Can’t Survive

New Zealand government has ordered doctors to Kill the Covid-19 patients if they can’t survive.

Patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 can die by euthanasia if doctors decide they might not survive, the New Zealand government has declared.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that a right to a lethal injection under a new euthanasia law could extend to patients who were either dying from the coronavirus or suffering unbearably from its consequences.

In response to a request for clarity on a euthanasia law which came into force last month, the government declared that “in some circumstances a person with COVID-19 may be eligible for assisted dying”.

The admission that COVID patients were eligible for a lethal jab came after Henoch Kloosterboer, editor of the anti-euthanasia The Defender website, made a request under the Official Information Act – the New Zealand equivalent to the 2000 Freedom of Information Act.

He said the policy left “the door wide open for abuse” of elderly and vulnerable patients – especially if the country’s health service came under pressure from a COVID surge.

He said: “It would not be hard to envisage a situation in which a speedy and sizeable rise in COVID-19 hospitalisations could result in pressure to utilise euthanasia and assisted suicide as tools to resolve such a serious crisis.”

The euthanasia law, he added, “has now made the COVID-19 pandemic potentially even more dangerous for the people of Aotearoa New Zealand”.

The 2019 End of Life Choice Act is considered to be one of the most extreme euthanasia laws anywhere in the world, and critics say the safeguards are so flimsy that they are easily circumvented.

It permits both euthanasia and assisted suicide for adults suffering from an illness which would be terminal within six months, or who were in an advanced state of irreversible physical decline or who were suffering unbearably.

The law, ratified following a referendum in 2020, guarantees all residents the right of access to a doctor who will kill them within a period as short as four days from receiving a request.

Doctors receive a government fee of $1,000 plus expenses for every euthanasia death they perform.

Just 96 of the country’s 16,000 doctors have offered to participate, however, and all but one of the nation’s 32 hospices have indicated that they will not permit euthanasia.

The one exception – Totara Hospice in South Auckland – has agreed to allocate space on its premises for the practice while its staff will conscientiously object to any participation.

In the UK, Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, a professor of palliative medicine, said the New Zealand euthanasia law contradicted the fundamental purpose of medicine and health services to heal the sick.

She said: “It is bizarre that a country which has been trying to protect it citizens by closing down completely from a virus from which people can fully recover … is now suggesting that these patients should be killed by their doctors.

“It turns the ethos of medicine on its head,” she said.

“You really cannot predict death 100 per cent,” she added. “So why not support them while they are dying and leave the door open in case they are in the group that defies all odds and recovers completely?”

At present, Baroness Meacher is seeking to legalise assisted suicide in England and Wales through her Assisted Dying Bill, which in October received its Second Reading in the House of Lords.

The crossbench peer, who chairs the campaign group Dignity in Dying, has also tabled an amendment to the Health and Social Care Bill in an attempt to make assisted suicide a part of palliative care.

In Scotland, Liam MacArthur, the Liberal Democrat MP is intending to introduce an assisted suicide Bill and in politicians in Jersey last month agreed in principle to legalised both assisted suicide and euthanasia.

  • Aso Rock Deserted As Presidential Aides Contract COVID-19, Infections

    By DELE ALABI

Activities at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, have been shut down following an outbreak of COVID-19 at Nigeria’s seat of power, with many presidential aides testing positive.

Multiple sources said that the spread of COVID-19 infections at the Aso Villa was traced to the installation ceremony of Yusuf Buhari, the only son of President Muhammadu Buhari as a district head (Talban Daura) in Katsina.

Sources added that following the outbreak, Buhari is closely being monitored by health officials as most of those who contracted the virus are “too close to him”.

“In the meantime, the President’s planned visit to Katsina has been cancelled,” one of the sources revealed on Monday.

The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar, on Saturday, December 18 turbaned Yusuf Buhari as Talban Daura and district head of Kwasarawa community, an event that was well attended by government officials.

Also in attendance at Yusuf’s turbanning were Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State, his Kano State counterpart, Abdullahi Ganduje, Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, were equally in attendance.

Also in attendance were the Emir of Bichi in Kano State, Nasiru Ado Bayero; former Governor of Borno, Ali Modu Sheriff and members of the Katsina State House of Assembly.

However, President Buhari and his wife, Aisha, did not witness the ceremony as they were in Istanbul attending the third Turkey-African Partnership Summit at the time.

“Aso Rock has now been deserted over the number of President Buhari’s aides that have contracted COVID-19. Currently, President Buhari is being monitored by health officials. Plans for the President to go to Katsina have been stepped down for now.

“The recent spread of the virus at the Aso Rock was traced to his son, Yusuf’s coronation ceremony in Katsina,” another source told SaharaReporters.

Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Sunday said there was nothing abnormal in presidential aides testing positive for COVID-19.

There had been reports that some presidential aides including the Permanent Secretary in the State House, Tijani Umar; the President’s aide-de-camp (ADC), Yusuf Dodo; his chief security officer (CSO), Aliyu Musa, and his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu tested positive for COVID-19 and were in isolation.

Speaking on the development, Adesina, in an interview with Channels Television, said presidential aides are also humans and not immune to happenings around them.

“What I like to say is that presidential aides are just humans. They can fall sick. If anything happens to human beings, it can also happen to presidential aides,” he said.

“The fact that we are presidential aides does not make us immune to certain things. If there is a virus that is ravaging society, well, it can touch anybody.

“So Mallam Garba Shehu has confirmed that, yes, he tested positive but he said it’s mild. And I believe that by now, because it happened since Wednesday, by now, he should almost have beaten it if he has not beaten it already. There is no cause for alarm.”

But when he was asked how many presidential aides in the State House had contracted the virus, Adesina said he could not reveal the details as it is a private matter.

“That will not be within my purview to discuss, maybe if you get the presidential doctor or anybody on the medical side, they will tell you, I wouldn’t know because it is a private thing,” he added.

“If it happens to anybody, it’s between that person and possibly the doctor. It is not going to be general knowledge. So I may not be able to say.”

In the past few days, Nigeria has been reporting a steady increase in COVID-19 infections, in what has been confirmed as the fourth wave of the pandemic by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Last Wednesday, the country recorded 4,035 cases, the highest single-day count since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

On Friday, NCDC announced that 45 cases of the Omicron variant had been detected in the country.

As of Sunday, December 26, Nigeria recorded 237,561 cases of COVID-19 with 21,989 cases currently active, while 212,550 persons have been discharged and 3,022 deaths recorded.

  • JUST IN: JAMB Clarifies No Vaccination Card, No Entry Policy For Candidates

Sequel to its earlier directives, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has on Tuesday clarified the policy of no vaccination card, no entry.

The board noted that all candidates, clients and other members of the public below the age of 18 years are not required to produce any vaccination card before being allowed access to its facilities.

JAMB said these categories of persons are not covered by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Vaccination Policy.

Spokesperson of JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin gave the clarification on Tuesday

He said this became expedient in view of the misinterpretation of the Board’s policy of no vaccination card, no entry into any of its facilities nationwide earlier announced.

Recall that the Board had announced a policy of no vaccination card, no entry into any of its facilities nationwide.

The Board had earlier said: “In line with the extant protocols rolled out by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has resolved that no staff and visitors alike would be allowed entry into its facilities nationwide without evidence of full vaccination.

“In line with this entry protocol, staff and visitors or clients are to present acceptable evidence which is: COVID-19 Vaccination Card, any identification Card connecting the holder to the Vaccination Card, preferably the National Identity Card, Driver’s license, or International Passport.

“This stipulation is to ensure, among others, that staff or visitors do not present vaccination cards that belong to other individuals.

“From available statistics from relevant agencies, the virus is spreading like wildfire, hence, the clarion call for all to be vigilant, observe all protocols and for institutions, be it public or private, to adopt relevant protocols to nip the spread of the virus in the bud.

“As a proactive agency, the Board is adopting this protocol in the light of its heightened preparations for the commencement of the 2022 UTME/DE registration exercise.

“We implore all not to be pulled to the sense of security as pertains to the COVID-19 pandemic as the increasingly dangerous dimension the virus is assuming should be a source of concern to all especially with the emergence of more virulent Omicron variant.

“In addition, the Board enjoins all to adhere strictly to all the stipulated non-pharmaceutical protocols and guidelines emplaced to mitigate the spread of the virus”.

Dr Benjamin in the statement, however, said the Board discovered that many underage candidates were making frantic efforts to get vaccinated with some even falsifying their age to be vaccinated just to access services at the Board’s facilities.

He noted that the policy, as announced by the Board, was in tandem with the NCDC policy of no vaccination, no access to public places as well as ensuring that only persons eligible for vaccination are vaccinated and issued the card.

Meanwhile, in view of likely abuse by individuals, the Board would also require evidence of being underage to allow any underage individual access to its facilities.

“This directive is to protect the public as well as the staff of the Board from the ravaging virus and would want all and sundry to play their own part in this battle of ensuring that we have a healthy and productive population,” JAMB said.

  • FCTA may revoke titles of 435 abandon buildings in Abuja – Director

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) says arrangements have been concluded to sanction owners of 435 uncompleted and abandoned structures in Federal Capital City (FCC), Abuja.

This is contained in a statement signed by the FCTA Director of Land Administration, Alhaji Adamu Hussaini, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Hussaini said that the measure is aimed at ensuring adequate protection of lives and property in and around the 250 square kilometers of the FCC, Abuja,

“In order to ensure adequate protection of lives and property in and around the 250 square kilometers of the FCC, the administration may have concluded arrangements to sanction owners of 435 abandoned/uncompleted structures.”

The director, who revealed that the sanction may include revocation of titles, advised the owners of such abandoned and uncompleted buildings within the City to swiftly work towards the completion of those buildings.

According to him, such structures have become a source of security breach in the city.

“The security breach is of great concern to the government and that it will not fold its arms to watch danger in the waiting to explode. This development has been a cause of worry for the FCT Administration.

“These abandoned and uncompleted buildings have become shelter for unintended occupants as well as other persons with criminal disposition, who use these uncompleted structures as hideout to perpetuate their nefarious activities against the residents.”

He also disclosed that the same fate may befall owners of about 600 undeveloped plots in the FCC.

He emphasised that such undeveloped plots have remained an eyesore in Abuja, in spite of huge amount of money spent to provide basic infrastructures in the districts.

Hussaini recalled that the owners of undeveloped plots scattered around the Abuja metropolis have been warned severally in the past, yet some remain recalcitrant.

He disclosed that though there exists thousands of uncollected Certificates of Occupancy in the vaults, the Department has conveyed 495 Certificates of Occupancy to owners from January to Dec. 2021.

The director, however, implored other allottees to come over and pick their Certificates as such act would help lubricate economic activities of the territory.

On the issuance of Rights of Occupancy within the year under review, Hussaini explained that the department released a total of 1,319 titles to the beneficiaries.

He also revealed that there are quite a huge number of uncollected Rights of Occupancy in the vaults.

The director, therefore, advised those who have applied for land in the FCT to endevour to come forward and check the status of their applications.

Hussaini said the department had witnessed a tremendous increase in the number of fresh applications for land in the territory during the year under review.

He noted that a total number of 8,010 applications for land have been received between January and Dec. 2021.

The director stated that the department undertook and released 546 Certified True Copy documents to various allottees in the year under review.

  • 1.5 million Nigerians in Italy don’t have passports – NIDOE

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, Europe, Italy Chapter, says about 1.5 million out of its three million registered members in Italy are affected by scarcity of Nigerian passports.

The chapter’s Chairman, Mr George Omo-Iduhon, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday.

NAN quoted Omo-Iduhon as saying that there are more Nigerians in Italy than in other European countries and the registered Nigerians according to database are three million, apart from the undocumented ones.

He said, “One of the major problems being faced by Nigerians living in Italy is shortage of Nigerian passports that can help facilitate their movement and work permit.

“The Nigerian government should help address this problem because Italy serves as the gateway to other countries in Europe, especially for Nigerians.

“About 1.5 million Nigerians in Italy don’t have passports, even some of those that have been accepted by the Italian government have not been issued Nigerian passports which makes it difficult for them to work.”

Omo-Iduhon said the supply of 500 booklets of passport to the Nigerian Embassy in Italy was grossly inadequate to serve the number of Nigerians resident in Italy.
