APC With Buhari On Naira Redesign, Not Divided — Atika Ajanah

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atika Ajanah, has insisted that the ruling party is not divided concerning the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Speaking on Channels Television’s The 2023 Verdict on Monday, Ajanah said that the party stands with President Muhammadu Buhari on the policy.

“We are not divided, that is what the opposition like to make others believe, because some of our governors have come out to say we feel the pain of the people. We are not just going to go the way of the CBN or what the Attorney General of The Federation have come to say.

“The governors interact with the people directly, they deal with the locals, they know more than anyone what the people are feeling and hearing from them is. So, we are not divided against each other, we are with the President,” Ajanah said.

Ajanah, who is the Assistant Secretary Protocol and Events of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, said that the President in his speech on Sunday explained there is going to be light at the end of the tunnel.

Noting that the ruling party is taking Buhari’s words on that, she maintained that the governors worry that the policy affects the masses the most.

Ajanah added that the APC expects the CBN governor to go back to the President and discuss the policy again having seen what is happening on the streets of Nigeria.

Some governors of the APC have expressed strong opposition to the naira redesign policy and approached the Supreme Court to stop the February 10 deadline for the validity of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes.

However, in a broadcast on Thursday, President Buhari approved the validity of old N200 notes till April 10 and banned old N500 and N1,000 notes but some APC governors have insisted that old N500 and N1,000 remained legal tender.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear the matter on February 22, days to the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
