New naira notes : How Emefiele outsmarted Tinubu, El-Rufai – Deji Adeyanju

Rights activist and convener, Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, has said the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, has outsmarted presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State and other politicians through naira redesign policy.

Adeyanju said Emefiele outsmarted the plot by politicians to unleash stockpiled billions on voters during the upcoming elections.

In 2022, CBN announced the redesign of N200, N500, and N1000 notes.

Emefiele had fixed January 31st, 2023 as a deadline for the swap of the old naira notes with the new ones.

Following the outcry that greeted the deadline, Emefiele announced an extension of the date till February 10.

Amid the deadline extension,  Tinubu and El-Rufai  alleged that the redesign naira policy was targeted at the party’s presidential drive.

However, Adeyanju said politicians would not get the new naira notes during the 2023 elections.

In a chat with DAILY POST, Adeyanju said the CBN should stop bank executives from delivering the new notes to politicians.

According to Adeyanju: “No matter the tears El-Rufai and others shed during this period, nobody is delivering new Naira notes to anyone’s house in a Bullion van this time.

“New naira redesign is one of the best decisions of the Emefiele-led CBN, Tinubu’s tears notwithstanding.

“CBN outsmarted the plot by politicians to unleash stockpiled billions on voters for vote buying. The next step is to stop bank executives from handing over new notes to them.”
