VMCII Rejects 2023 Presidential Elections, Calls For Total Cancellation

Reactions have continued the trail the outcome of the recently concluded presidential election in Nigeria which produced the candidate of All Progressives Congress APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the winner.

The INEC had declared Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State the president-elect following the exercise which has attracted widespread condemnation within and outside the country for falling below the expectations of Nigerians.

The latest is coming from a democracy crucader group, Votes Must Count International Initiative (VMCII), an organisation that has rejected the outcome of the election, calling for its total cancellation.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Monday, the Country Director of VMCII, Barry Avotu Johnson accused the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu of neglecting the Electoral Act 2022 as amended in the conduct of the election but instead used a doctored script which made the exercise a mere selection of Tinubu as the winner of the contest.

"This actions are wrong from every aspect of a nation practicing democracy as its system of government. And as a democracy outfit, we in the “VMCII” are officially rejecting the outcome of the elections released by INEC as the results.

"The elections must be cancelled and should not be allowed to stand because it activities were characterized with electoral irregularities where INEC itself compromised by not following and obeying the guidelines or regulations provided by the electoral act 2022 as amended and provided by the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria", it said.

The group said INEC's refusal to upload the election results on its IREV portal in real-time created avenue for rigging and manipulations which gave APC victory at the end of the exercise.

VMCII insists that the presidential and National Assembly elections must be cancelled so that the electoral umpire, INEC can adopt the Electoral Act in conducting fresh polls that will be acceptable to all Nigerians.

While calling for the withdrawal of Certificate of Return issued to Bola Tinubu, VMCII said it it also important to appoint an interim president who will take over from President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, 2023 pending to completion of fresh polls.

It said, "We are calling on the world powers to stand by Nigeria at this time in history as we find ways to a lasting peace, unity and democracy by all means because if Nigeria is allowed to go down at this time, the world would not be able to hold us back as the numbers of refugees would take over every nation of the world.

"If Nigeria falls into a war zone it will be something that cannot be controlled because of the number of persons that will be loosed into disconnect. President Buhari must stand up now before it gets too last to restore Nigeria from bad leadership and the disrespect for the rule of law. We cannot afford to have a sitting president and our nation would be under attack by men of the underworld who call themselves politicians."
