Why Police searched Seun Kuti’s residence – Lagos PPRO

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Tuesday, said the command duly obtained a warrant to search Seun Kuti’s residence.

The police on Tuesday evening stormed the singer’s residence on No 15, Akin Osiyemi Street, Off Allen Avenue in Ikeja.

According to the police, this was part of ongoing investigations of the alleged assault perpetuated by Seun Kuti.

“It’s part of our ongoing investigations. We were investigating assault, we stumbled on some things we needed to verify. We got a duly issued search warrant which we went to execute,” Hundeyin said.

The musician, in a video that went viral on May 13, was seen slapping a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

He, however, alleged a murder attempt on him and his family by the policeman in the circumstance leading to the incident.

Seun Kuti turned himself in at the Ikeja Police Station on Monday where he was further transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, paraded and detained by the police.

On Tuesday, the police arraigned the singer on charges bordering on assault before a Magistrates’ Court in Yaba.

The prosecutors led by S.A Adebese and Morufu Animashaun prayed to the court to remand the suspect for 21 days pending legal advice from the Director of Prosecutions.

Kuti’s lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, prayed the court not to remand his client as the defence counsel was not aware of the application.

Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun, who presided over the matter, subsequently remanded the singer in police custody for 48 hours and ordered the police to complete their investigation within this period.

If found guilty, the musician is liable to three years imprisonment as the offence contradicts Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.
