‘It’s bringing death to many men’ – Pat Utomi opens up on battle with cancer

Renowned economist and chieftain of the Labour Party, Professor Pat Utomi, has opened up on his battle with cancer.

The Delta-born Utomi, who took to his messaging app X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, said prostate cancer is wreaking real havoc on several men in the country.

According to Utomi, he was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, forcing him to seek immediate medical intervention in Lagos.

He said : “When a biopsy showed I was positive last year I began treatment with a cancer Centre with a branch in Ikeja and VI. I sometimes came from election campaigns to the Ikeja Centre near the Airport. The Doctors would try to smuggle me out from the back. The well known shielded ?”

In another tweet, the Peter Obi’s political ally said : “I am moved this dawn of light to confront an epidemic under the carpet with great harm to men. Prostate cancer is bringing death and misery to many men. Had they been forewarned the misery containment and even chances of cure could be much enhanced, like women have with breast CA. ”

PlatinumPost reports that research shows that prostate cancer has become the number one cancer in Nigerian men and constitutes 11 percent of all male cancers. The median age of patients was 67.5 years (variance 5.6), and the mean age was 71.4 years (variance 14.3).

Age, family history, and ethnicity contribute to the risk of developing prostate cancer. Regular screenings, such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests, can help identify the disease early and improve the chances of successful treatment.
