Insecurity: Police to strengthen anti-kidnapping unit in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa Police Command Tuesday, promised to strengthen its anti-kidnapping unit in a bid to effectively deal with emerging challenges.

To this end, it said the unit would be expanded from two to four with the deployment of additional personnel to make it more potent.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Police (CP), Umar Nadada, when the leadership and members of Nasarawa State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) paid him a courtesy call at the Force headquarters in Lafia, on Tuesday.

Nadada said although the command along with that of other sister security agencies in the state have successfully reduced criminal activities to the barest minimum, there was need to plan and strategies in order to deal with any eventualities.

Speaking on the recent launch of the Nomad Vigilante by a Fulani sociocultural association,Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, in the state, Mr. Nadada said the command was not officially notified of their existence.

“It’s is our duty to attend any gathering to provide security and ensure that hoodlums do not hijack the event or the organisers themselves will not do anything illegal.

“Even when they came to our headquarters, I addressed them outside the command headquarters because there was no formal notification,” he explained.

He said the command would not work or recognise with any group which is not legally constituted.

He commended the NUJ leadership and members for supporting the command through massive coverage of its activities.

Earlier, the NUJ Chairman in the state, Comrade Salihu Alkali, urged the command to increase patrol around tertiary institutions in the state to curtail the incidences of kidnapping and robbery.

He commended the command for its efforts in ridding the state of criminals.
