BREAKING : NLC, TUC declare nationwide strike over minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a nationwide strike set to begin on Monday, June 3, 2024.

This decision comes in response to the ongoing deadlock in the tripartite committee’s negotiations for a new minimum wage.

Festus Osifo, President of the TUC, declared the strike during a joint press conference with NLC leaders in Abuja on Friday.

The labour leader explained that the decision was made following the expiration of an earlier ultimatum issued to the Federal Government, demanding the conclusion of all minimum wage negotiations by the end of May.

Osifo said the strike had become unavoidable as the government declined to increase the N60,000 wage it offered on Friday during the meeting of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.

Speaking further, the TUC bosss said the refusal of government to reverse the hike in electricity tariff also contributed to the industrial action.

“We are hereby declaring the commencement of a nationwide industrial action, effective from Sunday midnight June 2 (sic), 2024, and this strike shall be indefinite.

“We are united on this and we believe that this is the way forward,” he said.

PlatinumPost reports that the organised labour unions had previously withdrawn from negotiations and rejected two proposals from the Federal Government, with the latest offer being N60,000.
