The Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage is set to reconvene on Tuesday, May 23, following a breakdown in talks on May 15 when organised labour walked out of the negotiation.
In a letter addressed to labour leaders, Committee Chairman Bukar Goni indicated that the committee members, including representatives of the Federal Government, are willing to reconsider their initial proposal of N48,000.
The letter urged labour leaders to engage with their members and participate in the upcoming meeting.
The organized labour, represented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), had proposed a new minimum wage of N615,000, significantly higher than the government’s N48,000 offer.
Meanwhile, the organized private sector suggested an initial wage of N54,000.
After the walkout, labour leaders held a press conference to express their frustration with the Federal Government’s offer.
NLC President Joe Ajaero reiterated their demand for N615,000, citing an analysis of the current economic conditions and the needs of an average Nigerian family of six.
He criticized both the government and the private sector for the stalled negotiations.
