More than 10 Nigerian teenage girls, believed to have been trafficked to Ghana for prostitution, have been rescued, announced Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).
The girls, all minors under the age of 18, were reportedly enticed from Nigeria to Ghana by an unidentified individual, who has since been apprehended by Ghanaian authorities.
According to Dabiri-Erewa, the girls were liberated by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), a collective representing Nigerian expatriates in Ghana.
In a widely circulated video capturing the aftermath of the rescue, a NIDO representative lamented, “We just rescued all these ones from one single person, innocent Nigerian children that were brought here to do what they wouldn’t have wished do to. They are helpless. They picked them and send them to do prostitution and they would be collecting money from these innocent children.”
Expressing dismay over the situation, Dabiri-Erewa took to social media to urge the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to intervene, stating, “These are young girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution. We thank Chief Callistus, Chairman, NIDO Ghana, for ensuring the arrest of the evil perpetrator. I am sure NAPTIP will follow up, very heartbreaking.”
In a subsequent update, Dabiri-Erewa disclosed that another group of girls has been rescued and assured that legal proceedings will be pursued against the perpetrator in Ghana. Efforts are also underway to repatriate the rescued girls to Nigeria.
Insisting on accountability for traffickers, Dabiri-Erewa emphasized, “They are worse than drug barons! And as long as they are walking about freely, innocent young children will continue to be trafficked!”
