In a deeply disturbing incident that has shocked the community, the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the Nsukka Division, under the Enugu State Command, has arrested a 30-year-old man, Nweke Chukwuemeka, for the brutal murder of a four-year-old girl.

The tragic event occurred in a compound on Orba Road, Nsukka Local Government Area, leaving residents in horror and disbelief.

According to police reports, the suspect allegedly slit the throat of the young girl, Zinachukwu Ugwu, while she was asleep.

The crime was committed after the suspect had reportedly smoked methamphetamine, a dangerous drug locally known as Mkpujurummiri.

The shocking nature of the crime has left the community in mourning and raised serious concerns about drug abuse and its consequences.

The police were alerted to the situation through a distress call and quickly moved to apprehend the suspect. DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, confirmed that officers found the lifeless body of the child upon arrival at the scene.

The child was immediately taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her body has since been placed in the mortuary.

The police also recovered the weapon used in the murder—a knife—as well as quantities of suspected Indian hemp and a charm from the suspect.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Nweke Chukwuemeka, originally from Umuagu-Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area, was living in the same compound as the victim’s family.

He initially attempted to attack other neighbors before entering the child’s apartment and committing the heinous act.

In a chilling confession, Chukwuemeka admitted to the crime, claiming that he acted under the influence of methamphetamine, Indian hemp, and an alcoholic drink known as Action Bitters.

He also confessed to being a member of the Vikings Confraternity and revealed his involvement in a 2022 cult clash in Jos, Plateau State, where he allegedly killed a member of a rival group.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has described the crime as barbaric and unimaginable.

He extended his condolences to the victim’s family and assured them that justice would be served. CP Uzuegbu has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to expedite the investigation and ensure the suspect is prosecuted swiftly.

In his statement, CP Uzuegbu also urged citizens to be vigilant and aware of the behavioral patterns of those around them to prevent such senseless acts in the future.

The arrest and forthcoming prosecution of Nweke Chukwuemeka bring some hope of justice for the grieving family, but the loss of young Zinachukwu Ugwu is a reminder of the devastating impact of drug abuse and violence in our society.
