APC sweeps Imo LG elections amid low voter turnout

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a sweeping victory in Saturday’s Local Government elections in Imo State, winning all 305 Councillorship and 27 Chairmanship positions across the state’s 27 Local Government Areas.

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) announced the results at its headquarters in Owerri on Sunday.

ISIEC Chairman, Charles Ejiogu, confirmed the APC’s dominance in the elections but did not disclose specific vote counts from the participating parties.

He assured the public that detailed results from the 305 electoral wards and 4,758 polling units would be made available in due course. Ejiogu expressed satisfaction with the peaceful nature of the election and praised the decorum exhibited by political parties and stakeholders.

“All the details of the results will be made available accordingly,” he said, acknowledging the participation of 19 registered political parties in the elections.

Despite the peaceful process, the elections were notably marked by voter apathy, with reports suggesting that voting did not occur in several local government areas.

This followed the decision of the Inter-Party Advisory Council in the state to boycott the elections earlier in the week.

Iheukwumere Alaribe, the newly elected Chairman of Aboh Mbaise, promised to lead with transparency and inclusivity, emphasizing his commitment to serve with the fear of God.

While the election results are now official, ISIEC urged any aggrieved parties to follow legal procedures in addressing their concerns.

The low voter turnout and opposition boycott have raised questions about the broader political landscape in Imo State, with many awaiting further developments in the aftermath of the elections.
