Court remands man to enable him ‘think of how to provide for his children’

A Shari’a Court in Kaduna on Wednesday ordered the temporary remand of Musa Hussaini, urging him to reflect on how he will provide financial support for the upkeep of his four children.

The petitioner, Hajara Sani, a mother of four, had approached the court seeking assistance in reclaiming some of her property that Hussaini had sold.

She explained that Hussaini sold two of her chairs and a television and also pressured her into selling her bed before divorcing her.

“I gave him the money I got from selling the bed shortly before he divorced me,” she told the court. She further requested the court to confirm the three pronouncements of divorce made by Hussaini and to order him to take responsibility for their children’s welfare.

In response, Hussaini admitted to making three separate divorce pronouncements and selling the items with Hajara’s consent, claiming he needed the money to repair his tools as a vulcanizer.

He revealed that the television and chairs were sold for N5,000, while Hajara gave him an additional N6,500 from the sale of the bed.

Hussaini asked the court to allow him to pay in installments, offering to provide N2,000 weekly. However, when questioned about his provision for the children, he admitted that he had no plans for their upkeep at the moment.

Presiding over the case, Judge Malam Mukhtar Aliyu, ordered the defendant’s remand for a few hours to reflect on how he would fulfill his responsibility toward his children. The case was adjourned until September 25 for further hearing.

This case has brought attention to the issue of parental responsibility and the importance of ensuring the welfare of children in divorce proceedings.
