Hippopotamus kills guard at Emir of Yauri’s orchard farm
A tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a hippopotamus attacked and killed Malam Usman Maigadi, a 60-year-old guard at the Orchard Farm owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi.
The attack took place at Yauri River in Tillo Village, Yauri Local Government Area, Kebbi State, while Maigadi was fishing.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, the animal may have acted in self-defense, perceiving Maigadi as a threat to its baby. The Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, confirmed that Maigadi was buried according to Islamic rites following a funeral prayer in Yauri.
Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, expressed his condolences to the Yauri Emirate and the family of the deceased.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, the governor urged the family to find solace in the will of Allah, praying for forgiveness of the deceased’s shortcomings and asking Allah to grant him Jannatul Firdaus.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by wildlife, even in seemingly routine activities like fishing, in areas where human and animal habitats intersect.
