Nigerian university’s students trapped as storey building collapses
A storey building on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, in Benin City, Edo State, collapsed during a heavy downpour on Saturday morning, trapping several University of Benin (UNIBEN) students.
The area, known for housing students, was thrown into chaos as rescue efforts began shortly after the collapse.
According to an anonymous student, a university rescue team managed to pull some trapped occupants from the debris, many of whom suffered serious injuries.
The injured were quickly transported to the hospital for urgent medical care.
However, one student remains trapped under the rubble, with rescue teams working tirelessly to locate and extract them.
Reports indicate that the victim made a phone call from within the collapsed building, pleading for assistance.
UNIBEN’s Dean of Students is present at the scene, coordinating rescue efforts in collaboration with the university’s team.
As of the time of this report, the university has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident’s cause or the exact number of those affected. Rescue operations are ongoing.
