President Tinubu congratulates Monday Okpebholo on Edo governorship election victory

Published on

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, for his victory in the just-concluded Edo State governorship election.

Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes to defeat his closest competitor, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party finished third with 22,763 votes.

In a statement released on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, the President praised Okpebholo for his victory, describing it as a reflection of the people’s support for the APC.

However, Tinubu advised Okpebholo to remain humble in victory, urging him to reach out to his rivals and focus on uniting Edo State for its development.

“President Bola Tinubu congratulates Senator Monday Okpebholo, the APC candidate in Saturday’s Edo State governorship election, on his victory at the polls. He urges him not to gloat but to view this as a challenging call to service,” the statement read.

Tinubu also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for ensuring a peaceful and successful election, while encouraging any aggrieved parties to seek legal redress in court.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari also extended his congratulations to Okpebholo in a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

Buhari described the victory as “historic” and called on both winners and losers to work together to strengthen democracy in Edo State.

With the election now over, all eyes are on Okpebholo as he prepares to take on the responsibilities of governing Edo State, with hopes high for the state’s future development.
