Tinubu reacts to emergence of John Mahama as Ghana’s president-elect
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama following his victory in Saturday’s general election. This came after Mahama’s opponent conceded defeat.
During a telephone conversation with Mahama, Tinubu expressed optimism that his second tenure would promote greater stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In a statement issued by the president’s spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Ghanaians for their commitment to democracy, as evidenced by the peaceful and successful conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections.
“Ghanaians have once again shown the world that democracy is the most viable path to achieving political stability, economic growth, social justice, and transparent governance in Africa,” Tinubu remarked. He added that the collective belief in the people’s right to freely choose their leaders remains a source of pride for Nigeria and the region.
Tinubu also commended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana and candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his graceful concession of defeat even before Ghana’s Electoral Commission officially declared the results. Tinubu noted that Bawumia’s actions underscored Ghana’s strong democratic principles.
Reflecting on Mahama’s political journey, Tinubu stated that his return to the presidency, having previously served from 2012 to 2017, signifies the trust Ghanaians have in his leadership and vision for the nation’s future. Mahama’s extensive experience includes serving as Vice President from 2009 to 2012, Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2009, and holding both deputy and ministerial positions between 1998 and 2001.
“President Tinubu reaffirms his commitment to strengthening the historic bonds between Nigeria and Ghana, built on shared history, cultural connections, mutual support, Pan-African aspirations, democratic values, the rule of law, and economic collaboration,” Onanuga said. Tinubu also expressed gratitude to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo for his exemplary leadership and contributions to Ghana’s development and regional stability.
Looking ahead, Tinubu said he anticipates collaborating with Mahama’s incoming administration to further bolster bilateral relations across various sectors, fostering a brighter future for the West African region.
