Power outage hits parts of Nigeria as national grid suffers major disruption

Published on

Several areas across Nigeria, including Lagos, were left without electricity on Friday after a disruption in the national grid.

The outage occurred as the Federal Government was celebrating what it described as a significant milestone — reaching 6,000MW in power generation.

Reports indicate that power generation, which stood at around 4,000MW earlier in the day, plummeted to below 1,000MW by 2 p.m. The highest recorded generation for the day was 5,284MW at 5 a.m., but by 4 p.m., output had dropped to just 803MW, with many power plants yet to reconnect to the grid.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has not yet issued a statement, and efforts to reach the company’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, were unsuccessful.

Electricity distribution companies have, however, informed customers about the situation. The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company stated in a notice:“Dear esteemed customer, Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 07/03/2025 @ 14:00hrs, affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company also addressed its customers:“Dear valued customer, kindly be informed there was a system disruption on 7th March 2025 at 13:59hrs, which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as the power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us.”

Efforts are ongoing to restore electricity, with power companies assuring customers that updates will be provided as the situation develops.
