Published on

In commemoration of its annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Day on October 14, the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) chose the FCT School for the Blind as the venue to mark the 2025 edition of the event, bringing laughter and hope to the faces of vulnerable members of society.

The visit to the school on Tuesday was also seen as strategic in consolidating the Association's massive investment in education and human capital development.

Despite their visual impairment, pupils of the school and their teachers were in high spirits as they ushered the accountants into their expansive hall with a melodious welcome song, to the excitement of the visitors.

In his address, the Chairman, Corporate Social Responsibility Committee of ANAN, Dr. Cletus Okwuchukwu Odoh, mni, a Fellow of the Association, noted that impacting the lives of communities is one of the objectives the body holds tenaciously, which also aligns with its dedication to empowerment through education and capacity building.
According to Dr. Odoh, the visit became necessary, especially at a time when the need to raise a credible successor generation that will take over the profession in the future has continued to resonate. While emphasizing that ANAN is a body that nurtures, builds, and develops, the CSR Committee Chairman reiterated the readiness of the Association to offer further assistance to ensure that the pupils have a conducive atmosphere to learn.

Also speaking, the Director, Corporate Affairs and External Services of ANAN, Dr. Bello Rahman, emphasized that career talks with students in the nearest future will be considered in order to encourage them to take up accountancy as a career.

According to him, catching them early in life provides proper guidance and direction that form the basis for an informed career path, noting that ANAN is committed to deploying its platform to engage the students on what the profession entails.

“As you are here pursuing your studies, for those of you who are inclined to be accountants in life, ANAN is there for you. At any point in time, you can ask the management of the school to get in touch with us to come and talk to you on how to become a professional accountant,” Bello stated.

In his remarks, former Chairman of ANAN FCT 1 Branch, Wahab Shina Omoniyi, said the focus on education is deliberate, as it provides beneficiaries the opportunity to grow and become contributors to the discourse on nation-building.
Mr. Omoniyi, a Fellow of the Association who had undertaken similar outreach during his tenure as the FCT 1 Branch Chairman, said the visit serves as an opportunity to draw the attention of the national leadership of ANAN to the existence of such a school in Abuja, so that as a body, more attention will be paid to alleviating some of the challenges faced by the pupils and teachers.

Expressing appreciation for the kind gesture, the Head Teacher of the school, Hajia Hafsat Umar, said the school has been running largely on the support of individuals, professional bodies, and corporate organizations.

Represented by the Head of Administration, Mrs. Elizabeth Emmanuel, she said that although the government has been very supportive, organizations such as ANAN have contributed significantly to the school’s success story.

Items distributed during the outreach included special typewriters for the blind, slates, styluses, talking calculators, braille papers, white canes, rice, semovita, indomie, and other relief materials.
