Iran war : Ghanaian soldiers hit by missiles
The headquarters of Ghana’s United Nations peacekeeping battalion in Lebanon came under missile attack on Friday, leaving two soldiers critically wounded, the Ghana Armed Forces said in a statement.
Lebanon was drawn into the ongoing war between Israel/ United States and Iran on Monday after Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel, prompting a fresh Israeli offensive against the militant group.
Ghanaian troops are deployed in Lebanon as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeping mission.
According to the statement, the Ghana Armed Forces did not identify who carried out the missile attack. However, it said the country’s foreign ministry had lodged a protest over the incident at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Aside from the two soldiers who sustained critical injuries, the statement added that another soldier “has been traumatised” while the officers’ mess facility at the base was struck and completely burned down.
